Forest Lost

Conversion of forests to another type of land use

Forest loss is defined as the conversion of forests to another type of land use or the permanent reduction of tree cover, below the minimum threshold of 10%. For its calculation, the land cover maps of the Colombian Amazon produced by the SINCHI Institute at a scale of 1:100,000 are taken as a basis.

Forests perform key functions for ecosystems and for many rural populations and indigenous groups, in addition to being a source of food and other raw materials. For this reason, its loss, regardless of its magnitude, has consequences both at an environmental, social and economic level.”
